6 DOF Arm
Starting from the chassis and ending with a differential, this 6 degree of freedom one meter long arm performs all payload manipulation and movement for the rover.
The one meter long arm goes from our moving chassis to our high precision end effector; mounted on a differential. The six degrees of freedom allows us to impact and perform every task as needed.
The primary design focus was precision through survival - specifically within our competitions we have to carry heavy items and deal with vibrations. Our main goals for design are to be both fail-safe and fail-proof. The way to do that, we found is through simplifying our designs and building them for both assembly and debugging.
The desert is dusty and warm and sometimes wet. The arm needs to survive all of that. It also needs to function as protection and mounting for wires, cameras - all in the hot desert sun. But all while surviving we also need to be at high precision at our end effector.
